Way back in the 1980's I played in a hard rock band called Fair Warning. It was a
really good band (if I do say so myself) and we were quite popular, on a local scale. We recorded a four-song
EP entitled "Love to Rock'n'Roll" which was sold through various independant outlets.
After Fair Warning finished I set about making some money out of rock'n'roll. I quit my engineering
job and joined a band on the Queensland circuit called Wizzards. We played all over Queensland and also
did a six week stint in Darwin. We were playing top-40 covers with a rock edge. I held this gig for about
nine months, then headed back to Victoria.
Upon arriving back in Melbourne I went for an audition with a concept cover band called Teacher's Pets. The
band had professional management and was just starting up. The gimick was that all the band members dressed
in school uniform. No surprises that a fundamental part of the the concept was a sexy young woman singer in a
very short skirt.
The band underwent a few line-up changes, but eventually hit on a winning combination and the work began to
flow. For awhile it was a very professional outfit with a good following. It was also a lot of fun to play in. The
repertoire consisted mainly 70's and 80's rock covers, stuff like Cheap Trick, Suzi Quatro, Ram Jam's Black Betty,
and so on.
For about the blinking of an eye I played with a great bunch of hard rockers playing 80's hair-band stuff.
The band had evolved from an orginal project and was very popular on the Melbourne hard-rock/metal scene. We
played lots of Guns n' Roses, Poison, all that kinda stuff.
After Pets I played in a band consisting of some of the old Pets lineup. I dunno if the name made much
connection for many people, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. This band included Gavin Carroll on
bass, and played more hard rock and 60's stuff, as well as the typical Pets songs. This was a very powerful band
with great vocal harmonies, and again, a lot of fun.
Consisting of the Skool's Out personnel, this was an original project of Anita Monk and Gavin Carroll. Some
great original tunes were recorded for the album "Age of Descent". The band only played live once with me on guitar, but
I have very fond memories of the songs and being allowed to contribute to them.
After a very long absence from music, I joined a Fleetwood Mac tribute band called Fleetwood To The Max in
2005. A very dear friend of mine, Samantha DeVos was singing with them. I talked Anita into joining and the gigs starte.
The band lasted for a couple of years but we had serious management problems (Brian - where's my fucking money you
arsehole!!!!). Anyway, much fun was had while it lasted.
A short while after FW2TMax disbanded I saw an ad for guitarist with Gypsy - the Australian Fleetwood Mac tribute show.
I joined them in late 2008 and play with them still today.
In between Fleetwood to the Max ending and Gypsy starting, I joined a country fock band called Bad Habits. The
band is based in the (far) eastern suburbs and plays Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd type classic/country
rock. It's been a revelation for my guitar playing. I've always hated country music, and still cringe at most of
it, but I'm having a whole lotta fun learning this chicken-picking style of playing. Still gotta long way to go, but
enjoying it a lot.
